"I will sing of well-founded Earth, mother of all, eldest of all beings. She feeds all creatures that are in the world, all that go upon the goodly land, and all that are in the paths of the seas, and all that fly: all these are fed of her store.."- Homeric Hymm to Mother Earth

Etymologically Gaea (or Gaia) is a compound word of two elements. "Ge" meaning Earth, a pre-Greek substrate word and "Aia", a derivative of an Indo-European stem meaning "Grandmother". Thus the full etymology of Gaea would appear to be "Grandmother Earth". In Greek mythology, Gaea (Mother Earth) was the oldest of the gods whensforth sprang the starry heavens, the mountains, plains, seas and rivers that make up the Earth as we know today.

The Gaea hypothesis is an ecological theory that proposes that the living matter of planet Earth functions like a single living organism. Accordingly, the Earth s not a living organism which can live or die all at once, but rather a kind of community of trust which can exist at many discrete levels of integration.

We at Gaea Laboratories, believe that all of the Earth's living matter, air, oceans and land form an interconnected system that can be seen as a single entity.  By nurturing, protecting and respecting our planet, its natural resources and its inhabitants, we enrich our own lives and those of future generations.
